Press Release

Easynet helps Birmingham City traffic flow

12 June 2012

Easynet Global Services has today announced a new seven-year deal with public services provider Amey, which will see it provide a fully-managed MPLS network for Birmingham’s Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system. The contract will help Amey, who work in partnership with Birmingham City Council to maintain and manage the city’s roads, to connect road-side traffic signals to the central traffic signal operational control room. This will help to reduce congestion and improve traffic safety across the region.

The new network from Easynet will help Amey to improve and maintain the Birmingham Highways infrastructure, which includes 2,500km of road network, 95,000 street lights and more than 850 highway structures and bridges across the city. The Easynet solution is a versatile and fully-resilient platform, which unites sites and applications in a private network. Its controlled MPLS core will provide Amey with end-to-end bandwidth for enhanced use of Birmingham’s UTC. This will significantly reduce operating costs over the lifetime of the network and facilitate the development of intelligent road side devices such as CCTV cameras, environmental monitoring, Variable Message Signs, Car Park Guidance & Traffic Monitoring devices.

The contract follows similar implementations for Transport for London (TfL), to connect CCTV and congestion charging systems, and for Transport for Greater Manchester to support its Intelligent Traffic Systems, such as traffic lights and CCTV cameras, meaning Easynet has now played an integral role in easing traffic flow in three of the UK’s largest cities.

Ivan Gunatilleke, Easynet’s UK managing director, said: “The public sector is still being tasked with finding ways to improve efficiencies, and our project with Amey for Birmingham City’s UTC system is all about using technology to add value and save money at the same time. I am pleased that we are able to help the city reduce congestion levels and ultimately improve traffic safety by providing them with a network to closely monitor and react quickly to any traffic issues.”

Mike Notman, Amey project director commented “We are pleased to be working with Easynet and believe that their experience in the transport sector makes them the ideal choice to support the team at the UTC. With Easynet’s network, we are able to work with Birmingham City Council to make the city a safer and less congested place”.
